About the Role
We’re seeking a Trainee Data Scientist to assist in designing and implementing scalable, robust data tools and processes supporting the Management Information Systems (MIS) capability. This is a fixed-term contract role offering the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to cutting-edge data initiatives.
The successful candidate will work closely with senior data professionals under direct supervision, gaining exposure to modern data engineering practices and cloud-based analytics environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in designing and implementing scalable processes for data ingestion and transformation.
- Support the development and maintenance of data pipelines from multiple sources.
- Ingest and process large, complex datasets in functional and efficient ways.
- Enable innovative business solutions by managing large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
- Build bulk and delta data lift patterns for optimal ETL/ELT operations.
- Support the organisation’s cloud data strategy and governance initiatives.
- Engineer data in suitable formats for analytics, risk, and enterprise applications.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and automation projects.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet data requirements and solve business problems.
- Provide operational support to data services and assist in testing and deploying new features.
- Develop dashboards to track performance metrics and conduct ad hoc data analysis as needed.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric.
- Currently completing 3rd or 4th year tertiary studies in BCom, BSc, or BBusSci (Information Systems, Computer Science, or IT).
- Knowledge of data warehouse architectures, ETL/ELT tools, and analytics platforms such as SSIS/SSRS, SAS, SAP, MongoDB, Apache Spark, or Hive.
- Basic DBA knowledge across platforms like TSQL, SAS, PSQL, IBM VSAM, or DB2 (advantageous).
- Familiarity with Python or similar programming languages.
- Exposure to AWS Cloud solutions and API integrations beneficial.
- Understanding of DevOps principles and data engineering best practices.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
- Interest in software engineering, data management, and distributed systems.
