About the Role

BMW Group South Africa is hiring a Specialist: Technology Steering to oversee, coordinate, and optimize technology-driven processes within the assembly environment. The position focuses on steering resources, productivity, automation, and ergonomics while driving efficiency and innovation in production systems.


Key Functional Responsibilities

  • Resources Steering and Productivity Steering.
  • Ergonomic assessment and analysis steering to ensure optimal work conditions.
  • Project Technology Steering and Control, including low-cost intelligent automation (LCIA).
  • Optimization of material flow directly affecting the assembly environment.
  • T4 contractor management and service provider optimization.
  • Planning, coordination, and reporting of VPS (Value Production System) activities.
  • Assembly process optimization with the PSP team, including lineside presentation.
  • System maintenance and IT interface regarding NAS, BVIS, DIVA, WARENET, and printers.
  • Coordination of time administration for hourly direct labor, including shift management.

Key Tasks

  • Secure short-, medium-, and long-term fulfillment of the production program.
  • Steer and monitor budget, headcount, and annual investment requirements.
  • Develop operational concepts and assess feasibility of plant projects.
  • Implement improvement measures for serial production efficiency.
  • Drive ergonomics assessments and ensure technical availability.
  • Ensure method competencies within VPS and continuous improvement.

Main Duties

  • Initiate, manage, and enforce headcount and cost requirements for direct labor and manufacturing overheads.
  • Monitor and manage departmental budgets for operations and projects.
  • Develop personal development plans for departmental staff.
  • Ensure compliance with IMS and business process requirements.
  • Establish long-term budgets (LUP, LIP) and strategic targets for costs and productivity.
  • Oversee line balancing, manpower planning, and ergonomic analysis.
  • Drive cost and labor productivity improvements.
  • Maintain time administration and general administrative functions.
  • Support on-time delivery, quality, volume, and budget targets within the assembly plant.
  • Control internal and external supplier performance.
  • Initiate and manage special projects to improve delivery, throughput, and efficiency.
  • Introduce new systems and ensure compliance with international norms for productivity and visualization.
  • Manage strategic projects to optimize assembly work organization and methods.
  • Oversee new product launches involving line balancing, productivity, and headcount planning.
  • Support FK Prop and direct headcount planning with central planning teams (TP and TI).
  • Implement and maintain SHEQ standards (ISO TS 16949, ISO 14000, 45001, ISO 18000).

Supplementary and Auxiliary Activities

  • Support company and departmental objectives.
  • Promote teamwork and internal/external relationships.
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards.
  • Coach, coordinate, and supervise staff.
  • Support HRC and operational teams in plant ill-health processes.
  • Plan and optimize new production methods.
  • Benchmark flexibility targets and LCIA solutions with local and international plants.
  • Increase transparency in budget and cost management.
  • Manage damage-related costs impacting assembly processes.
  • Oversee the DS&R process in plant.

Innovation and Change

  • Actively participate, steer, and mentor the Innovation and Digitalization Center of Competence (CoC) locally and internationally within the BMW Group.

Education

  • Degree in Engineering, Business Economics, or equivalent.

Experience

  • 4–5 years’ experience in Engineering, Business Planning, and Project Management.
  • 4–5 years’ experience in Management or Production Information Systems.

Additional Skills

  • Strong knowledge of motor vehicles and modern mechanical, electrical, and electronic technologies.
  • Expertise in quality techniques, engineering methods, and production processes.
  • Advanced communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
