Take the Helm of Environmental Management in Knysna

Are you a passionate environmental leader ready to make a real impact? The stunning coastal town of Knysna is looking for a dynamic Manager of Environmental Management to join its Planning and Economic Development Directorate. This is a unique opportunity to lead critical environmental initiatives in one of South Africa’s most beautiful and ecologically sensitive areas.

In this permanent role, you’ll be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from combating invasive alien plants and restoring fresh water systems to managing coastal properties and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation. Your work will directly contribute to the sustainability and preservation of the Knysna community and its natural environment.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental management, with a minimum of eight years of relevant experience, including at least three years at a managerial level. You’ll need a relevant three-year tertiary qualification, an Environmental Management Inspector’s Certificate, and a valid driver’s license.

Beyond the formal qualifications, we need a strategic thinker with excellent communication skills, a knack for problem-solving, and a keen eye for detail. Experience in drafting grant funding applications is a significant plus.

Key Responsibilities

As the Manager, you will be in charge of:

  • Leading and coordinating the Environmental Management Division’s operations.
  • Spearheading the clearing of invasive alien plants and rehabilitating rivers and wetlands.
  • Enforcing relevant environmental legislation and advising on project compliance.
  • Facilitating the municipality’s participation in climate change strategies.
  • Managing coastal properties and maintaining Blue Flag and Green Coast Standards.
  • Identifying and securing grant funding to support key projects.
  • Leading and managing the division’s human and financial resources.

This is more than just a job; it’s a chance to be a guardian of Knysna’s natural heritage. If you’re a proactive, results-driven professional ready to take on this challenge, we encourage you to apply.

The application deadline is September 3, 2025. You must use the official Knysna Municipal Application form and submit all required documents via email. Please note that correspondence will only be with shortlisted candidates.
