The Opportunity

Discovery Central Services is seeking a highly skilled and recently qualified Group Accountant to join the Accounting function. This pivotal role is responsible for the meticulous consolidation of monthly and annual financial reporting for the entire Discovery Group, ensuring compliance with international standards and providing critical information for executive and board-level decision-making.

This position offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive exposure to the group’s financial architecture, reporting directly on key performance metrics and regulatory requirements.

Key Areas of Responsibility (What You Will Do)

I. Group Consolidation and Reporting

• Management Accounts: Assist in the production of monthly consolidated management accounts, including the Group Income Statement, Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Other Comprehensive Income, Statement of Changes in Equity, and Cash Flow Statement.

• IFRS Compliance: Review foreign subsidiary translations and process all consolidation adjustments necessary to produce IFRS-compliant results.

• Segmental Reporting: Prepare detailed segmental financial information for management review.

• Statutory Reporting: Produce the Interim Results and Annual Financial Statements (AFS) for Discovery Limited Group, as well as other required external reports.

II. Executive Support and Planning

• Executive Submissions: Assist with preparing financial results for Discovery Limited Board meetings.

• Planning & Forecasting: Produce a consolidated view of the Group’s budget and forecast for presentation at Group Exco and Discovery Limited Board.

• Investor Relations: Assist with ad hoc queries received from the External Reporting and Investor Relations team, including the preparation and review of SENS announcements relating to financial results.

III. Control and Compliance

• Regulatory Support: Provide financial information to the Group Risk team to support regulatory reporting, including Solvency and Embedded Value.

• Audit Liaison: Serve as a key contact point, liaising effectively with both internal and external auditors to address queries and provide requested information.

• System Administration: Assist with the administration and maintenance of the accounting system (Sage) and the reporting tool (OneStream) for the Discovery Group.

• Business Queries: Assist with ad hoc finance queries received from various business areas.

Candidate Profile

Qualifications & Experience

• Qualifications: Must be a qualified CA (SA) (Chartered Accountant, South Africa).

• Experience: Minimum of 0 to 3 years of post-qualification experience in a similar accounting role.

• Advantageous Experience: Experience in the insurance industry and specific consolidation experience will be highly beneficial.

• Technical Expertise: Advanced knowledge of IFRS standards is mandatory.

• System Proficiency: Advanced knowledge and experience using Microsoft Excel.

• Professionalism: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively under significant pressure during peak reporting periods.

• Organisation: Proven strength in project management skills to handle multiple reporting deliverables concurrently.
