This is a full-time contract role until June 30, 2027, where you’ll be at the forefront of our environmental initiatives, ensuring we meet regulatory requirements and maintain our commitment to the planet.

This role is perfect for a proactive individual with experience in the petrochemical industry who is ready to take on a multifaceted role. You’ll work on everything from groundwater management to waste compliance, all while collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

What You’ll Be Doing

As an Environmental Specialist, you’ll be the key coordinator for critical environmental activities. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Groundwater & Soil Management: You’ll coordinate all activities required to ensure compliance with the Refinery Remediation order. This includes supervising external contractors, managing groundwater monitoring, and engaging with authorities.
  • Waste Management: You’ll ensure full compliance with the Refinery Waste license and other legal requirements, such as the Basel convention.
  • Team Support: You’ll support the Environmental Team Lead on various initiatives, including NEMA S30 reporting and biodiversity management. You’ll also assist the Environmental Graduate with their development objectives.
  • Field & Safety Support: You’ll provide support to the Business Continuity and SHEQ teams, including weekend and holiday support, and during Turnaround events, where you’ll assist with field checks and incident reporting.

What You’ll Bring to the Team

The ideal candidate for this role is a knowledgeable and experienced professional with a strong background in environmental science or chemical engineering.

  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience in a South African Petrochemical Refinery is required, ideally within an Environmental or Process Safety Management Team. Experience in groundwater management is highly advantageous.
  • Education: A National Diploma in Chemical Engineering or Environmental Science is essential. ISO14001 awareness training would be a plus.
  • Skills: You must have a strong knowledge of the South African environmental legal framework, advanced computer and analytical thinking skills, and excellent written and verbal communication. A valid driver’s license is also required.

If you’re ready to make a significant impact and help us maintain the highest environmental standards, we encourage you to apply. The application deadline is September 24, 2025.
