Lead Digital Transformation: Chief Information Officer (CIO)

We are seeking an exceptional Chief Information Officer (CIO) to lead our university-wide Information Technology (IT) initiatives. This is a critical full-time, fixed-term position (five years) with a highly competitive salary, based in Bloemfontein, with implications for the Free State and Western Cape regions.

About the Role:

As the Chief Information Officer, you will serve as the principal technology leader for the University, responsible for providing the vision and strategic leadership for the delivery of information technology strategies across the institution. You will be instrumental in enabling an advanced technology-based student learning experience and enhancing employee productivity.

This role directs the planning and implementation of enterprise-wide IT systems, specifically aimed at improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the academic project and the quality of university services. At the core of this position is the responsibility for all aspects of the organization’s information technology and systems, with a principal focus on driving comprehensive digital transformation across the entire institution.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities:

• Strategy & Operational Planning: Provide leadership and guidance in the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the digital transformation strategy.
• Technology Management: Oversee the acquisition, deployment, and maintenance of fit-for-purpose technologies.
• Operational Management: Direct daily IT operations, ensuring seamless service delivery.
• Vendor Management: Strategically manage relationships with IT vendors and service providers.
• Financial Oversight: Plan and manage IT expenditures effectively.
• Team Leadership: Manage the performance and development of the IT staff, fostering a high-performing team.
• IT Governance: Ensure robust IT governance frameworks are in place and provide comprehensive management reports.

What We’re Looking For:

Qualifications & Experience:

• Education: Master’s degree (NQF 9) or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Information Systems, Management, or any other information technology-related field is essential.
• Experience:
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of relevant experience in an ICT environment.
  • Of this, at least ten (10) years must be in the management of an ICT environment.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of proven experience specifically as a Chief Information Officer (CIO).
• Knowledge & Skills:
  • Proven experience in IT planning, organization, and development.
  • Strong understanding of human resource management principles, practices, and procedures within an IT context.
  • In-depth understanding of ICT Governance.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership ability.
  • Exceptional ability to set and manage priorities judiciously.
