The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and customer-focused individual to join our team as a Cashier for the GBS Canteen, located within our established call center base in Umhlanga. This is a critical role responsible for ensuring exceptional service delivery to our staff, maintaining efficient and accurate transactions, and contributing to a welcoming and organized dining environment.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a central role in both front-of-house customer service and back-of-house support:

A. Cash Handling and Customer Service

  • Manage all customer transactions accurately using the cash register and Point of Sale (POS) system.

  • Process various payment types (cash and credit) and issue corresponding receipts, refunds, and change.

  • Accurately scan goods and ensure correct pricing is applied during checkout.

  • Resolve customer queries and complaints professionally, providing relevant information and guidance.

  • Actively cross-sell products and introduce new promotions to customers.

  • Handle merchandise returns and exchanges efficiently.

B. Food Service and Hygiene

  • Dish food to customers, strictly adhering to portion sizes as directed by the Catering Manager.

  • Monitor service periods and proactively communicate to expedite food replenishment when items are running low.

  • Handle and pack food for various campaigns and catering needs.

  • Maintain the highest standards of food hygiene, health, and safety regulations at all times.

  • Clean and sanitize workstations and surrounding surfaces, ensuring the area is neat and tidy.

C. Stock Management Support

  • Assist in other areas of the kitchen and food service operation when cashier duties are complete.

  • Replenish stock items and ensure efficient display.

  • Assist with stock checks upon arrival, ensuring items are accurately dated, labelled, and rotated using the FIFO (First-In, First-Out) system.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Matric Certificate (Grade 12).

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of prior experience as a Cashier, preferably within a retail or food service environment.

  • POS System: Proven working knowledge and prior experience using Smart Retail POS systems is highly advantageous.

  • Technical Skills: Basic PC knowledge and manual dexterity for operating POS systems and kitchen equipment.

  • Knowledge: Familiarity with health and safety rules and basic hygiene standards in a professional kitchen environment.
