The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Specialist: Media Relations to join the Office of the CEO (Corporate Strategy Department). The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing and implementing strategic media relations initiatives that enhance the organisation’s reputation, visibility, and credibility.

About SABS
The SABS is mandated to develop, promote, and maintain South African National Standards (SANS), promote quality in products and services, and render conformity assessment services. Purpose of the Role
To develop and support the implementation of a media relations operational plan that strengthens relationships with media stakeholders and enhances the overall reputation of SABS.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Public Relations, Journalism, Communication, or a related field (NQF Level 7).
  • 8 years relevant work experience in media relations at operational level.
  • 4 years specialist experience in media relations at operational level.
  • Proven record in developing corporate media strategies and annual media plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit, and disseminate media releases effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Media Relations & Strategy

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive media relations operational plan and annual media plan in collaboration with the Head of Department.
  • Serve as a media liaison for SABS, fostering strong professional relationships with journalists and media outlets.
  • Identify opportunities for positive media exposure and ensure proactive communication of organisational achievements.
  • Oversee the dissemination of media releases and manage the SABS media list.
  • Conduct effective media monitoring of SABS operations and share insights with relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to align media initiatives with corporate communications, brand, and marketing objectives.
  • Communicate media trends, analysis, and performance reports to business unit managers.

Risk and Compliance Management

  • Support compliance with corporate governance, fraud prevention, and risk management principles.
  • Monitor changes in media and communications regulations, ensuring operational alignment.
  • Assist in audits and provide evidence of compliance with organisational policies and procedures.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance reputation and information sharing.
  • Represent SABS in relevant committees, task teams, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Engage with clients and media partners to ensure effective delivery of communications services.
  • Manage and resolve media-related queries and reputational risks in a timely, professional manner.
