The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) plays a critical role in the country’s economy, with a constitutional mandate to protect the value of the rand. Our Financial Markets Department (FMD) is at the forefront of these efforts, conducting key operations in both domestic and international markets.

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team in Pretoria as the Manager of Market Operations and Investments. This is a leadership position where you will oversee a critical unit and contribute to the core functions of the SARB.

What You’ll Be Doing

As the manager, you will lead the Market Operations and Investments Unit. Your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful, touching on several key areas of the country’s financial landscape:

• Strategic Leadership: You will lead and manage the unit, ensuring the quality of all deliverables and workflows. You’ll also play a key role in the career development of your staff and contribute to the FMD’s strategic planning.
• Monetary Policy Implementation: You will oversee the smooth implementation of monetary policy, ensuring all operations are conducted effectively to meet the SARB’s objectives.
• Investment Management: You will be responsible for the prudent investment of funds for the Corporation for Public Deposits (CPD) and the Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI), ensuring compliance with all relevant policies.
• Risk Management: You’ll identify and mitigate risks within your unit and ensure adherence to all governance frameworks.
• Stakeholder Relations: You will represent the FMD in various internal and external committees, building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to gather market intelligence and achieve departmental goals.

What We’re Looking For

This role requires a seasoned financial professional with a strong track record of leadership.

• Education: A minimum of an Honours Degree in Finance, Economics, or an equivalent qualification. A formal leadership/management qualification or a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designation would be a significant advantage.
• Experience: You must have a minimum of 8-10 years of experience in financial markets, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role. You should have a strong knowledge of both domestic and international money, bond, and foreign exchange markets.
• Essential Skills: You possess strong problem-solving, analytical, and mathematical skills. You are an effective communicator with a talent for building and maintaining relationships. You are a natural leader with excellent conflict management skills.
